Elixirs

Healing potions might be popular out east, but in the west there is an old tradition of brewing elixirs to cure wounds, aches, reduce hair loss, increase one’s libido, and even – it is claimed – bring life back to the dead. Most elixirs are brewed using rare plants and herbs, animal parts (snake venom in low doses being particularly common), and a bit of alcohol for good measure. The secrets of a good elixir recipe is well guarded, and each apothecary mixes their own blends and variants.

Crafting an elixir requires a recipe, an elixir brewing kit and an elixir bIntelligence or Wisdom as your ability score of choice. On a result of 10 or less, the elixir fails and becomes Snake Oil. A result of 11-14 results in a Poor quality elixir. A result of 15-19 results in a Standard quality elixir. A result of 20-24 results in a Good quality elixir. A result of 25 or higher results in a Superb quality elixir. In any case, the cost of crafting the elixir does not change.

The following are some examples of elixirs typically found for sale:

- Elixir of Health. Crafting cost: 50sp. Effect: when drunk, this elixir restores 1 hit points each round for the next ten rounds. (Quality: poor – only lasts five rounds. Good – lasts fifteen rounds. Superb – lasts twenty rounds.)
- Elixir of Vitality. Crafting cost: 100sp. Effect: when drunk, this elixir restores 2 hit points each round for the next ten rounds. (Quality: poor – only lasts five rounds. Good – lasts fifteen rounds. Superb – lasts twenty rounds.)
- Elixir of Life. Crafting cost: 200sp. Effect: when drunk, this elixir restores 3 hit points each round for the next ten rounds. (Quality: poor – only lasts five rounds. Good – lasts fifteen rounds. Superb – lasts twenty rounds.)
- Elixir of Revival. Crafting cost: 500sp. Effect: when poured down the throat of a creature that died within the last minute, brings them back to life with 1hp. (Quality: poor – only works if the creature died within the last three rounds. Good – works if the creature died within the last five minutes. Superb – works if the creature died within the last ten minutes.)
- Elixir of Miracles. Crafting cost: 5000sp. Effect: when poured over a dead creature, brings it back to life with 1 hp. (Quality: poor – the creature does not re-grow any bits that are missing. Good – the creature is restored with half of its maximum hit points. Superb – restores the creature at full hit points.)
- Elixir of Hair Growth. Crafting cost: 25sp. Effect: when rubbed onto a humanoid creature’s scalp, it slows down hair loss for the next month, as well as making their hair stronger, shinier, better. (Quality: poor – it accelerates hair loss. Good – it prevents hair loss for half a year. Superb – it prevents hair loss for a full year.)

- Snake Oil. If purposefully brewed rather than made by accident, snake oil costs 25sp to make. The effect is random, and rolled secretly at the time of consumption.
